Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Neil Grosscup, CEO of Tanteo Spirits LLC., located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are known for making the best Spicy tequila in the world that is perfect for spicy margaritas. We do this with an attention to detail that is economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable for all our stakeholders. Our customers are anyone who enjoys well-made tequilas that make it easy for them to be rock-star bartenders.

Tell us about yourself

I have been the CEO of Tanteo since March of 2014. Before getting into the booze business, I was studying to be a Catholic priest and thought my life was going to go on a very different path. In my professional career, I have worked behind a bar, for a beer distributor, and on the events side of liquor promotions. I am motivated each day by alcohol’s ability to bring people together, and hospitality is central to my love of my company and our industry.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I came on as the CEO, the company was in a poor financial situation and had just lost our founder, who unexpectedly passed away. I was able to roll up my sleeves, get to work, and get the company to grow with very few resources.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is no clocking in and clocking out. It can be challenging to relax and unwind when running a business. This is all the more important when you have a family.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It is OK to jump into something that you don’t have completely figured out. However, you need to have a pretty good idea of what you want to do.
  2. Clearly define milestones: Know your goals and make sure they are SMART (Specific, measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound). Have a plan if you hit them as well as a plan if you don’t.
  3. Pay attention to your people - you can’t do everything; make sure you recruit people to your business who are better at their job than you would be at it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A great business is something you love that also adds value to your customers. There are a lot of good ideas out there. Make sure you have a good business that you love and are proud of doing.
