Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Louise Taylor, Founder of Taylored Menopause, located in Chichester, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Taylored Menopause is a bit of an umbrella under which I have a number of different products to support women who are going through perimenopause and menopause. From Yoga for the Pause to Work with the Menopause, my aim is to reduce taboo, keep women working happily and healthily in menopause-aware workplaces, and provide tools to navigate this time of change.

Tell us about yourself

It started, not unsurprisingly, with me going through menopause myself. As a doctor, I was fully aware of what the next steps would be but was still sideswiped by them. I started by writing a book to share the research I did to traverse menopause myself and then found myself wanting to do even more to help women understand menopause and make it a more positive change time. Large numbers of women leave the workplace or take a sideways step or demotion at this time because they have not been able to talk and ask for support with these changes.

Helping businesses become menopause aware to keep women working and, therefore, more likely to get promoted to those board positions is what makes me sing. Giving women the ability to make simple lifestyle changes that allow them to live longer and healthier is also a huge motivator. In my day job, I can only support change with the person sitting in front of me; with speaker events in businesses, I can speak with large numbers of people all at once.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Adding Work with the Menopause to the business. I have collaborated with an HR consultant so we can provide a really comprehensive package of support for businesses to become menopause aware. It’s very easy for businesses to add a menopause policy but not actually change the culture. We help them understand and therefore keep women feeling supported and heard.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Letting people know what you do and finding new clients - I wish that people could find me by telepathy!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Collaborate. It is so important to recognise when someone else’s skills will improve your business. I wanted to help women in the workplace but could only offer half the solution.
  2. Ask! The first big speaker event I did, came about because I asked to be on the agenda. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of radio silence, but occasionally a great opportunity comes through.
  3. Do a bit every day. I still haven’t actually managed this myself, but I know it makes sense!
