Meeting Point of East and West - Templebody

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meredith Sands Keator, Founder of Templebody, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a somatic educator who works with clients who want to improve their health using a family lineage of stretches to reduce tension and increase blood flow. I also teach somatic therapists of all modalities who wish to amplify their treatment results using the understanding of geometric patterning to the nervous system.

Tell us about yourself

My family has always pioneered the path of healing arts, from medical doctors to osteopaths to alternative healing modalities. Therefore, it was always around me, but I didn't start to pay attention to it until my mid-twenties when I felt called to go to Shiatsu college, which then led me to acupuncture studies. I have pioneered my own way of working with the body through my various influences as well as many years of research that were inspired by a growing fascination with the body and its responses when working more directly with the nervous system. What keeps me going is knowing that my work really helps others, and the methods, first and foremost, help me a great deal. My work leads me to meet many amazing visionaries in the field, and my interest keeps growing as I see how deep the mysteries run in our bodies and consciousness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Sticking with it against the odds.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Turning off my mind, as well as the computer, and making time for my own relaxation and enjoyment.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. LEARN TO BUDGET AND BOOKKEEP! Essential to tracking your needs as well as your progress and helps in planning. It's also actually FUN once you glean the joy in having things make sense! I never ever thought numbers could be fun. Get your bookkeeping set up and learn about it right away too. You can't run a successful business when you have to pull in all your details at the end of the year or month or know what you can pay for and when - and there are great systems to use. As soon as you can hire someone to do some of it for you, definitely do that. Also, get your tax understanding in order and hire a really good tax accountant. I've been through a few until I found who works best for me.
  2. Schedule your physical exercise time - if not your time off. I do this at the end of the weekend in looking at the week and at the end of each day to appreciate what I did or what I can improve upon the next day.
  3. If you work alone at your own desk, set your own work hours and don't take personal calls until your work block is done. Also, turn off phone and computer notifications while you're working. The world is crazy at needing your attention, and it's a Ninja path to making sure you are the master of your own time. Otherwise, one day streams into the next, and you just work all the time.
