Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Teri Olivier, President of Celebrate! Work from Home, located in Hillsborough, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Celebrate! Work from Home is a Membership Community I founded for professionals working from home to help them Connect, be Empowered, and have a bit of Fun! It serves both those working remotely for their employer as well as entrepreneurs whose “home office” is literally their home.

Tell us about yourself

After 20+ years as a marketer working in traditional offices, our family moved from Texas to Maryland, which led me to start working remotely for the same employer. That was in 2005, when remote workers represented only a small portion of the workforce. While I was thrilled to be working remotely, there were gaps in my day-to-day experience. I later learned I was not alone in this, and that’s what led to the creation of Celebrate! Work from Home and my entrepreneurial journey!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a business where others working remotely can experience the benefits and power of a community has been my biggest accomplishment as a business owner! An example of this that has stuck with me, happened at the end of a virtual bingo when one of our Celebrate! Members mentioned her dog had recently died. The mood shift was palpable as stories were shared about the losses of beloved furry friends and how others had made it through their grief. The Member seemed moved to be so supported. It was amazing to see the power of community in action! It gave me chills!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest part about being a business owner is juggling the necessary, behind-the-scenes aspects of running a profitable business while continuing to offer value to Celebrate! Members and reaching out to new potential Members.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Establish your daily routine for success and stick to it.
  2. Create your big 3 goals and focus on making them happen. This is a mantra I’ve adopted from author, blogger, speaker, and online business coach Jonathan Milligan. He recommends you identify and stay focused on your big 3 goals for the year and, from there, break it down by a quarter to your big 3 goals for each quarter, and then establish 3 big monthly goals. Then, identify your weekly big 3 goals and finally your daily big 3 goals. I do my best to evaluate how I’m doing daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly, adjusting as needed. While I’d like to report success on each level, I can’t, but I do aspire to it on most days, and that’s when it has made all the difference for me!
  3. Find your circle, confide in them, and be open to their input! While you might be a solopreneur, it’s vital that you connect with others to vet your ideas and assumptions and to share your joys and your challenges. At the end of every purchase, there’s someone who made that decision “to buy.” When we isolate ourselves, we miss out on the voice(s) who might provide the insights we need to achieve the results we want. I’ve been blessed to have several circles of people engaged in my efforts with Celebrate! Work from Home. Their input and support have made all the difference, and I am so grateful!
