Old Vines, New Wines - TerraVox Winery

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gerard Eisterhold, Owner of TerraVox Winery, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Making wine from rare indigenous grapes - customers are people who are interested in exploring the unfamiliar.

Tell us about yourself

The winery is an outgrowth of a museum design business, and as such, I see it as a living museum, bringing a forgotten but important history back to life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving - and beginning to gain national and international notice of the heritage we are promoting (more so than the winery itself).

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is always too much to do, so - prioritization and thinking through consequences that can't be predicted. And engendering the energy and enthusiasm of others.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The first two come from Pogo (Walt Kelly).

  1. If you don't know where you're going, that's where you end up.
  2. If you don't think very well, you shouldn't think very much, and a corollary.
  3. Routinize where you can. Buy 30 pairs of the same socks, so you don't have to think about that anymore, ever.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Avoid nouns. English is a trap; it's 70% nouns. Think in verbs.
