Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shontell Graham, Owner of The A.P.P. Life, located in West New York, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am Dr. Shontell Graham, an African American woman and a certified professional coach who promotes total health and wellness. I do this through my company, The A.P.P. Life, active, proactive prevention.

Tell us about yourself

I began my career in radiology back in 1993. Over the years and through past family history, there have been repetitive occurrences of people dying from diseases that can’t be cured, treated, or in some cases, avoided.

Many ailments that plague my culture and many others are self-inflicted. I strive to provide health literacy. You don’t know what you don’t know. Knowledge is key to success. How can you tackle the problem if you are unaware there is an actual problem?

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am a self-published author of a Children’s book, Nia The Germinator. Learning starts at home. Why not have children start the process of learning about what enemies affect them? Let them play a role in being responsible for their health in any way they can.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is getting your information to the masses. I know we have social media, but you have to find the sweet spot. Trying to navigate through the algorithms is daunting and difficult. Getting funding is another difficult hurdle. You constantly hear how minor business owners have many resources but many you just to qualify for.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three tips that I would include:

  1. Focus on your why. Everyone that’s with you is not for you. Many people won’t see your vision or share your passion. Let you know why to be your unstoppable force.
  2. Stay with it. Every day is not going to be unicorns, Teddy bears, and sunshine. Remember, Diamond, are made with pressure.
  3. Never stop learning and evolving.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I will tell everyone never to be afraid to ask for help. As strong as you are, you can’t possibly know or do everything. Lastly, share. It cost you nothing to share. Just like you want people to support you, support others.
