Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in Health and Wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karley Alex, owner of The ADHD Nutritionist.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help adults with ADHD learn how to create healthy and balanced food habits! My students go through an eight-week program called "Nourish with ADHD", which breaks everything down into small, actionable, ADHD-friendly steps. ADHD is very correlated with some specific food challenges, including binge eating, eating for stimulation (or, in other words, for a dopamine hit!), and executive function challenges, which can make it difficult to "keep up" with healthy eating. My program fills a unique need in the health industry by addressing these distinct challenges.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a registered nutritionist who specializes in ADHD, and I also have ADHD myself! I have been interested in nutrition for as long as I remember, but I always struggled to stay consistent with healthy eating, despite my enthusiasm for it. After being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, everything began to make sense as I learned how ADHD was affecting my behaviour around food. I started to understand what had been contributing to my struggles for so long, and what I had to do to actually make lasting positive changes. I created the Nourish with ADHD program because it's the program that I wish I had back then!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating a program that is really helping to make a positive difference in people's lives. I understand what it feels like to be on the other side and think, "Why can't I just do this like everyone else!?" and not to know how to change your negative patterns. I absolutely love that I get to help other folks with ADHD navigate their way towards more balanced health habits.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner with ADHD, I'd say it's the ADHD! I'm certainly distractible and can struggle with time management, but I'm learning to use systems that help me with these things.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to pivot. Sometimes you start heading in a direction that's not working, and it's better to cut your losses than to keep moving toward a dead end.
  2. Ask for client feedback! Your customers can provide valuable insights to help you improve your product/service to make it the best it can be.
  3. Hire a bookkeeper ASAP (or is that just me? 😅).
