The Art of Slow Living - Ahista Tea

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashmit Patel, Founder of Ahista Tea, based in Toronto, Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

Ahista means 'at a slow pace' or 'too slowly' - this brings to mind the art of slow living by taking a step back and savoring each moment with thoughtfulness and intention. We take a minimalist approach when infusing tradition and innovation into our teas and tea-related products, handmade, sustainable, and organic certified. All of our teas are handcrafted by women with minimal mechanical intervention. Supporting and empowering women teamakers in India helps us bring gender equality into the tea industry. We specialize in working closely with Michelin-starred restaurants, plant-based cafes, luxury boutique hotels worldwide to elevate their tea offerings.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

It is one ritual that genuinely symbolizes unity and diversity and one common language that transcended regional distinctiveness. A simple cup of tea can instantly transport you to another world, like a portal across the ocean or continent. It has been connecting people, places, and cultures for many centuries. Yet, in many countries, tea is still in its nascent stages. There isn’t a clear idea of what is rare and premium when everything is labeled so. As a collective group, we have to educate, define, and judge quality.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Partnering with our first Michelin starred restaurant - Tamarind of Mayfair in London.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

You’re responsible for every decision that you make for the business. It’s a lonely journey but fulfilling when you’re able to change people’s lives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Everyone says it, but margins margins margins! Your margins need to make sense from the jump.
  2. Understand that your business will change over time. There will be multiple iterations. Don’t get married to the original idea.
  3. Don’t seek out an investment right away. Because the day that you do, your business will become an obligation. Nurture your business through sweat equity.
