Inspire and Empower - The Cold Hearted Collective

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts and crafts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allie Rapp, owner of The Cold Hearted Collective, located in Chandler, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Cold Hearted Collective is a Nebraska + Arizona-based typography brand that aims to empower, inspire, and welcome all people. I'm a graphic designer who started my business because I'm an advocate for creating the path you want but always doing good in the process. Our products not only encourage others to embrace their rebellious and adventurous side but also bring a much-needed laugh that the world needs. We're most known for our bold, unexpected colors, retro-inspired typography, and our witty phrases. The Cold Hearted Co. brings a fresh approach to graphic design goods while connecting with our audience that is made up of primarily Gen Zs and Millennials.

Tell us about yourself

I've always had a passion for color and vintage typography, both of which have a big impact on my design style. I first began designing when I was 14 but started it professionally when I was 18. Freelancing began as a way for me to pay for school and quickly turned into a side business once I printed my designs on stickers and small prints. I spent my four years in college meeting as many people as I could, doing pop-up markets, and really embracing my local community. Meeting people who are now directly impacted by my products and seeing their emotions when looking at my work is what motivates me every day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Over the last few years, I've gotten to work on a lot of really awesome projects, a few ones which have been for Spotify, Nike, Adidas, Foot Locker, and Facebook. Sometimes those 'pinch me' moments don't feel like real life, especially because I'm someone that hates talking about myself and my work. But looking back, it's been really cool to see the amount of growth that I've had both on my freelance side and my shop side! Each time I get a new wholesaler or purchase on my website, I feel like I'm one step closer to my goal, and that's all thanks to my amazing community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Imposter syndrome 100%. I have a lot of anxiety when it comes to being a creative and a business owner. When you run your own show, you often feel like nothing is permanent. For me, I've had to work through the fear that one day I might not find success and lose what I've spent the last seven years building. It's been an ongoing process, and to be honest, it's something I will probably always have to work on. The work I create is focused a lot on empowerment and self-growth, so I'm thankful I have that environment around me when things get hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Even if you don't know what you're doing, do it anyways. The truth is... no one really knows what they're doing in the grand scheme of things!
  2. Confidence is key, and so is knowing when to ask for help. Being a business owner can be really stressful and at times, lonely, so having a community of people around you that can be there for support makes a huge difference.
  3. Don't be afraid to say no. When I started out, I said yes to every single opportunity so I could meet as many people, potential clients, and customers as possible. After enough time doing this, I was going through an intense burnout where I had to rethink my approach and learn how to say no to things, and set boundaries at work. I'm a big believer that hustle is necessary, but so is taking care of yourself above anything else.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to go after what you want, and you're never too old to start over or chase a dream. Most importantly, always believe in yourself, so other opinions don't matter.
