Create Consistency in Your Marketing - The Consistency Corner

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ruthie Sterrett, Founder of The Consistency Corner, located in Palmetto, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a marketing strategist and content coach supporting service providers, consultants, and coaches who do not have a dedicated marketing department. My agency offers done-for-you content management, and I provide consultation and guidance for businesses creating their own content.

I have found most small business owners are wearing so many hats that marketing often is inconsistent while they juggle all the things. I created the Consistency Corner to help you create simple content frameworks which build trust and lead to sales every month.

Tell us about yourself

I have a long history in retail management and merchandising, and I was always inspired by retail brands showing up consistently across all channels of the market and using the power of a brand to create relationships with customers. People told me I should get into marketing, but I believed I didn't have the education or experience necessary to do so.

Once I landed a corporate retail role in merchandising, I worked closely with the marketing department. While learning marketing and brand strategy on my own while working on various side hustles, I started to figure it out. I was given the opportunity to step into a marketing role in 2018 and vowed I would figure it out. It took plenty of trial and error and lots of learning, but in 2020, the brand I was working for scaled the E-commerce division by 900% while still growing brick-and-mortar sales. I believe the work I did around branding, marketing strategy, and content contributed to this. As my department scaled and I helped new marketers learn the fundamentals, I realized I could help other small business owners take the overwhelm out of marketing. The Consistency Corner was founded in 2021, and I went full-time with it in 2022.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I left my corporate job with no clients and no income and was able to match my monthly salary with revenue within three months. The work I did on the front end in creating content helped me establish my method and gave me the confidence to deliver once I had the capacity to do so.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not working 24/7! I left the corporate world in serious burnout and was struggling to balance the demands of being a corporate executive, business owner, mom, and wife. Once I gained time flexibility, I poured myself into the business, as it was now 100% on me to make this work. As I took on clients and started supporting their brands, I tended to underestimate my own capacity and could literally work all the time. I know that's not healthy and will only lead to more burnout, so I'm working on it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be consistent, and stay focused on the process. Progress over perfection, and when you don't see progress (yet), go back to the process.
  2. Define your brand values, but know they can evolve. Get your brand values out of your head and on paper. Allow them to guide your decisions in business, messaging, branding, and marketing, and they'll attract the right clients and the right team to help you grow.
  3. Don't rely on social media alone, but know that it is part of the puzzle. Marketing is a complex ecosystem, and social media is a big part of it. You have to create a marketing strategy that will connect your brand to your business goals by having tools in place to help you attract, nurture and convert customers. Not one platform or one piece of content can do all 3. It's the compound effect of showing consistently with strategic and intentional messaging that will help you achieve your business goals.
