Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Cattoni, Founder of The Copy Posse, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a marketer, copywriter, and the Founder of the Copy Posse. Through our YouTube channel, online programs, and copywriting agency — we’ve helped over 300,000+ copywriters, marketers, and entrepreneurs sell more products and services that genuinely help people… without selling out on their integrity. We’re dedicated to getting messages that matter to the masses with the type of copywriting that today’s businesses need and today’s audiences crave.

We believe that the best copywriting combines the power of authentic brand storytelling with proven direct response marketing principles, and we are SO OVER the manipulative, scammy, and severely outdated sales tactics we see being used online. That’s why we’re rallying the raddest, baddest crew of copywriters around the planet to help us with one mission… To de-douchify the internet one word at a time and make caring cool again.

Tell us about yourself

In 2008, I decided to put law school on hold and move halfway across the world for an internship at Mindvalley, one of the world’s leading personal growth brands. I got to meet and work with some of the hottest transformational authors on the planet, network with the giants of the marketing industry, and quickly rose through the ranks of the then 8-figure company. After 3.5 years of insane growth and education, I made the tough decision to leave Mindvalley and move back to Canada to start my own freelancing business.

After eight years of running a freelance copywriting and marketing business, working behind the scenes, and writing for some of the hottest personal growth brands on the planet… I started to notice a dangerous divide in the copywriting industry. While there were a lot of brilliant and authentic marketers out there, many still used manipulative, hypey, and severely outdated sales tactics that I just didn’t vibe with. And, well, I had something to say about it.

Through our online programs and social communities, we’ve helped over 300,000 rad humans find more freedom, have more fun, and sell more products and services without selling out on their integrity. So in 2019, I stepped out from working behind the scenes and started my YouTube channel. And in 2020, I launched the Copy Posse focused on teaching entrepreneurs and copywriters how to ignite their businesses with modern copywriting and marketing.

Nothing motivates me more than watching my students take ownership of their lives. Seeing passionate, talented, and brilliant people from all around the world finally chase their dreams, create freedom, and build a life on their terms is both inspiring and motivating to no end.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’ve accomplished many things that I’m incredibly proud of since starting the Copy Posse. I went from anonymous copywriter to founder of a 7-figure brand in one year, accomplished my childhood dream of being featured in Forbes, I’ve spoken on stage at dozens of elite conferences and masterminds all over the globe, and in 2022, I was even crowned Marketer of the Year by DigitalMarketer. But I would have to say my biggest accomplishment is having helped thousands of rad humans around the world find more freedom, have more fun, and find their voices.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There is a certain level of control you HAVE to release if you want to continue to grow your business, expand your team, and make a bigger impact on the planet. For me, and almost every other business owner I know, releasing control is HARD. But it’s absolutely necessary for long-term success. As one person, you only have so much capacity and energy. You cannot do it all solo forever. Period. Full stop.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Forget about the “trends,” what the “experts” and “well-meaning” friends and family say you should do, and what everyone else is doing. Pave your own path and do things your way, baby.
  2. Make mistakes. Everyone HATES making mistakes—but the truth is that making mistakes can be our quickest and most powerful teacher. Both in life and in business! Our failures don’t have to be our downfalls. They can be our greatest motivators to do better and be better. Learn how to roll with the inevitable shit-storm that comes along with life and business, and you’ll be better off than trying to control everything or make it perfect. You’re going to make mistakes, Mercury retrograde is gonna come along and crash your servers, shit is gonna go up in flames… Expect it. Plan for it. And don’t stress over that which you can’t control.
  3. Celebrate every single win along the way. No matter how little. No matter how seemingly insignificant. No matter how un-exciting, dull, plain, or boring you think it seems. When you’re a business owner—you don’t have a massive group of people standing on the sidelines to clap and cheer you on every single step of the way. It’s just YOU. Be your own damn cheerleader.
