Build Your Best Self - The Factory Fitness Center

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jesse Cummings, Co-Founder of The Factory Fitness Center, located in Bremerton, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We own a gym called The Factory Fitness Center, and our customers are anyone who is looking to become a healthier version of themselves. Our motto is “Build Your Best Self,” so anyone that is looking to accomplish that will find a second home here.

Tell us about yourself

We were both athletes growing up and discovered a love for the gym and how much it can improve your physical and mental well-being. We wanted to create a place where others could do the same thing. Watching people literally change their lives for the better is our biggest motivation. We have been fortunate to see thousands of people become healthier, happier, and more successful versions of themselves by adding the gym to their life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment would be reaching 100,000 member visits at a single location in one calendar year. Knowing that so many people are changing their lives for the better through something we created is both exciting and humbling.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is knowing that you are ultimately responsible for so many people and the difficulty of making tough decisions. You can’t just look out for yourself; you have customers, clients, employees, vendors, etc. Each of them has their own unique needs and wants, and sometimes those needs and wants can clash. You must be able to find a balance which can be incredibly tricky and sometimes will make you look like the bad guy even when you make the necessary decision. Being able to make those decisions is a tough gig.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Treat people well. It doesn’t matter how good your business is if you can’t. Customers, employees, vendors, community members, everyone. Everyone matters, and your business will fail at some point if you don’t treat people well.
  2. Be prepared to work harder than you think. It can be a long, tough road, and those who make it are almost always the ones who just wouldn’t quit putting in the necessary hours.
  3. The details matter. Try to perfect your systems and business so that no detail is missed. Perfection may never be reached, but excellence can be. The difference between an average business and an excellent business almost always comes down to who gets the details right. A failed business gets few things right, an average business gets most things right, and an excellent business gets everything right.
