Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skin care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jesse Golden, Founder of The Golden Secrets, located in Topanga, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

TGS is a holistic, sustainable, cruelty-free skincare & wellness line. My customers are conscious consumers that want to feel beautiful in their skin without compromising their health or the planet.

Tell us about yourself

I started creating my own skincare in high school because I didn't like the way conventional skincare made me feel. I have a very sensitive constitution and realized the negative effects of toxic skincare & fragrance early on. These potions that I made for myself became synonymous with who I was, and only after years of people asking me what my "golden secret" was so, I decided to share.

My biggest motivation has always been my son. I was a single mom for most of his childhood, so it was on me to give him a good life and show him that you can do anything you put your mind to with heart and hard work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I am female-owned and run, self-funded, and grew my company the old way-word of mouth. Not having the funds to pay for marketing & beauty awards, I rely on my reviews, testimonials, and genuine people just sharing their love of TGS, not because they are getting paid to do so.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is no clock out. You really have to have an inner drive and inner hustle because the work is non-stop. You really have to oversee everything and make sure that it is aligned with what you want to put out into the world.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be authentic & transparent.
  2. Sell the problem you are solving.
  3. Hire your weakness.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

In this day and age, I feel like consumers are looking beyond the product and want to dive into the brand's ethos. Make your customers feel good about supporting your company by offering or doing things that go above and beyond to make the world a better place.
