Make a Believer Out of You - The Good Reverend Kombucha Co.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brent Henderson, Founder of The Good Reverend Kombucha Co., located in Middletown, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We make high-quality, small-batch craft kombucha using ancient practices to produce the healthiest and tastiest kombucha possible! Our customers are those who desire healthy beverage options without sacrificing flavor.

Tell us about yourself

I started making kombucha in 2009 in response to my wife's digestive health issues. A friend shared some kombucha with us, believing it might help with her issues, and it did! From the very first time she had it, her pain was completely gone. I've been making it for my family ever since. We hear countless testimonials about how our kombucha is improving the quality of life for so many people who have substantial health issues such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, pain and inflammation, and so on. That is why we do what we do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We've gotten to do some really cool things and work with some really great people. We created a line of kombucha that is specifically engineered for elite athletic performance, hydration, and recovery. We've gotten to work with professional athletes and provide kombucha for the Washington, D.C. NFL team, Washington Commanders, for three seasons now. However, making a product that benefits the health and lifestyle of the people we serve is our greatest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

That's a long list. Learning how to scale to meet the incredible rise in demand for our product without sacrificing the ancient practices and quality that our customers have come to expect has been one of our top priorities and challenges.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Go for it! Do what you are passionate about for the sake of the passion. Run your numbers, do the market research, and well-thought business plan with LOTS of eyes on it from those who have gone before you. Don't give up. Running your own business is very hard and very rewarding. Remember, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.
