Best Place to Cure What Ails You - The Herb Bar

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megen Mundy, Owner of The Herb Bar, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Austin's oldest apothecary, and we've been serving the community since 1986. We cater to those looking to improve their lives and health through different holistic modalities.

Tell us about yourself

I didn't grow up familiar with plant medicine but found my way to it after years of frustrations with prescriptions and chronic health issues. It changed my life so greatly that I decided to back to school in my 30s to pursue an education in herbal medicine. Before owning the shop, I worked here as an employee, so it's a very special place. The biggest motivator for me is showing people that they can take charge of their health, improve their quality of life, and find new ways to connect with nature and their bodies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hearing how much the store means to people! Seeing customers who've been with us from the beginning bring in their children and friends. Also, watching my team shine. I have such a wonderful staff; each brings unique talents and perspectives to the table, and I love watching them in their element.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management is the hardest element for me. Every day I come in with a list of to-do's, and then 15 more tasks pop up at the moment. I am slowly learning how to accept that it probably won't ever all get done, and that's ok.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would say number one is to make sure you are really passionate about what you're doing because they so many highs and lows, and the passion and love for what you're doing keep you going through the overwhelming moments.

Get a great staff, assistant, or someone to help you along the way. Having people you can trust as a sounding board and to help execute your vision is so, so important. I am fortunate in that department.

Always be looking for inspiration. I love going to different apothecaries or businesses I admire and seeing their work. Seeing all the cool things they come up with motivates me so much. I also spend a lot of time in nature, working with the plants I utilize in our products, which gives me a lot of creative inspiration. Staying in the know and constantly learning and growing is a big part of a successful business.
