Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matt Hodges, Founder & Owner of The MPH Method, located in London, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own The MPH Method, 'The Whole Body Practice,' which specialises in a more sensitive full-body transformation. Our 8-week Method is a spoon-fed fitness approach whereby the client gets a full body analysis, including hormone and metabolic testing, four training sessions a week, a massage a week, and a bespoke diet plan based upon the findings from the testing. The Method was built upon my experience within the TV & film industry getting actors and actresses in shape in a quick and efficient amount of time. I now roll out all of our services from our exclusive gym in central London.

Tell us about yourself

I studied product design and engineering at Loughborough University, which is famed for its sports. I picked up the workout bug there and got myself into good shape. It wasn't until I was working as a designer in central London that I got picked up by a photographer who offered to get me into what is now termed 'fitness modeling.' I ended up with numerous agencies and getting modeling work based on my physique. From here, I managed to secure a small role in Eastenders, whereby I'd often be asked by the crew members to help with their training and nutrition. Realising I wasn't qualified and therefore couldn't get insurance, I embarked on my personal training and sports massage qualifications. This then set the scene for 14 years working in the high net-worth field of personal training.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing 'Behind Gym Doors' which was released in December 2021

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finances - Personal training is not what people think it is. Often god awful hours and a constant slog in getting regular income. You can have months where you earn sensational money and others where you barely scrape by.

People - Managing clients' expectations with reality. This is always ongoing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Focus on three things:

  1. Branding - The message, the language, the look and feel, the demographic, and the core values of your business. Most people think branding is a logo. They often fail.
  2. Consistency - Most people fail because they aren't consistent enough.
  3. Results - If you're not getting any results, you'll find you go under pretty quickly. If it's making commission targets, clients' physical results, or winning a contract. If you're now getting any wins, then you're doing something wrong.
