Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sylvia Luong and Sarah Siu, co-founders of The Staging Room, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Staging Room is an interior design and home staging company. Our mission is to create beautiful and functional homes that clients love to spend time in. We curate furniture and decor pieces for our design clients based on how they will use a space, their budget, and their style. Our design packages allow clients to see the overall aesthetic of a room before investing in the pieces. Our floor plans provide confidence that, spatially, there is good flow and the space is functional. Our staging service elevates properties to their highest potential. It is targeted at top realtors in Toronto who want to over-deliver for their clients and sell for top dollar.

Tell us about yourself

We are Sarah and Sylvia, two friends who have a shared love for real estate and design. We created this business because we believe that your environment plays a critical role in your productivity, your overall well-being, and ultimately your success in life. We spend so much time in our homes, and it needs to be a place that uplifts us and motivates us to be our best selves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We are not trained stagers/designers in the traditional sense. Our education and work experience has been mostly in the finance and tech industry. We are proud of starting a business in an entirely different industry despite this fact. Many might be deterred from pivoting or starting over so "late" in the game, but our passion for design and serving other people in a way that improves their lives has made it all worth it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest but also most exciting things about being an entrepreneur are that your decisions have a direct impact on your success. There will be times when you question whether you are making the right decision, but you have to trust your instincts and run with it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust your instincts. Don't overthink your decisions to the point where you talk yourself out of taking risks.
  2. Don't undersell your service. Create a valuable service and sell it for what it's worth.
  3. Be consistent and don't give up. You don't know when your break will come (and you never will if you don't put in the work).
