The Therapeutic side of Yoga - Yoga Therapy Works

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tracy Roberge, founder of Yoga Therapy Works, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We at Yoga Therapy Works focus on teaching private and small class sizes with personal attention. I teach my clients how to set intentions for healing and to incorporate yoga into daily life. The therapeutic side of yoga will compliment your treatment plan from Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Physio Therapists, and from your Family Doctor.

Tell us about yourself

Having recovered from injuries myself, I teach with a sensitivity and a keen understanding of individual needs. My adjustments are gentle and precise, helping my students achieve the maximum benefit from their yoga practice. I urge clients to attune to their body’s messages and incorporate what they learn into their daily lives. I am also a Diet and Nutritionist Advisor. I can help guide you on the path to overall wellness, including nutritional choices. As a secondary healing modality, I introduce Reiki when needed into my sessions.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Continuing to explore new and innovative ways for wellness for my clients and students, as each of them is unique and has different needs.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting potential clients to realize that I can help them to become aware and reduce symptoms very quickly and sustainable change requires practice over a period of time. Minimum 2 months.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make sure to establish your mission statement, be clear on budgeting and marketing/communications planning and commit to ongoing re-investment both in your own skills and your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Difference between Regular Yoga and Yoga Therapy; A one-on-one session with me more closely resembles an appointment with a physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist than it does a typical yoga class. What sets this healing modality apart from others is the focus on linking movement to deep, rhythmic breathing. Another difference is the emphasis on relaxation. In fact, when someone is gravely ill, I may suggest that the entire practice consists only of breath awareness and relaxation until you are ready to tackle more. Then flexibility and stabilization options can be introduced, which may also include targeted myofascial release. Each session is customized to meet you where you are at for healing and growth.
