Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with William Hicks, CEO of Magic Mind located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We make a stress-free energy & focus shot that gets you "in the zone" and present with the task at hand. Our customers are the modern creatives and knowledge workers who contend with a never-ending inbox, back-to-back calls, and 20 different problems to solve every day.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been interested in self-improvement and being the best version of ME that I can be. So, when I discovered nootropics ("brain nutrients" that improve cognition), I was a huge fan right away. It's pretty wild that most of us only drink the same coffee bean-derived caffeine that's been around for hundreds of years while everything else has changed! It made sense that science and nature offered more interesting alternatives. When I first tried Magic Mind, I noticed that a zen-like focus had come over me. I was present and anxiety free. I was dialed in! So, I knew I had to quit what I was doing and help build this company into something that helps millions of people feel the same way every day. We now have over 6,000 subscribers, and it fires me up to think about all of them taking their shot each morning and then taking on their day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking three different products from ideation to commercialization and economic viability. So much goes into putting something new into the world, but it's awesome to know that it's possible and that by doing so, you can make a tangible impact on people's daily lives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I always say you need to have 90-day trailing average emotions in entrepreneurship. There will be days when you think you've "figured it all out" and there will be days where you think you're screwed (sometimes on the same day!). So, it's critical to stay level-headed in good times and in bad and just focus on executing

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ruthlessly prioritize and say "no" to good ideas in order to execute on great ideas
  2. Stay lean. Every new hire should provide a clear ROI. Otherwise, outsource it.
  3. In consumer goods businesses, don't forget about working capital! Growth is costly. Measure out your growth strategy intelligently, and fight for payment terms everywhere you can.
