Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Burton, Founder of The Yoga Dive, located in Grass Valley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Yoga Dive is a yoga studio and community center in Northern California. Our clients are anyone in the community seeking to deepen their yoga practice as a means to create more peace, ease, joy, and connection.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a yoga teacher for almost 20 years. I have taught in studios, corporate offices, private homes, schools, and parks. I lead international yoga retreats and teacher trainings. I was moved to open my own yoga studio when I relocated to Northern California as a way of creating a community for myself and sharing my gift in the area where I lived. I am motivated by my students who show up through all the ups and downs of life- and share their hearts. Our community is truly a "kula," or community of the heart. We support each other, celebrate one another's wins, and hold each other when hard things happen.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am very proud that our studio survived COVID in the way we did. We were able to pivot to an online studio and outdoor classes, paying our rent and continuing to practice together.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sometimes I fall into the trap of feeling like the only one holding all the responsibility. This, of course, is not true. It takes a village, and there are always people with special skills and generous hearts that are able to step up and step in to get everything done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep it simple and let others shine.
  2. Love what you do.
  3. Don't attach to the vision being one way only-let it evolve and transform as needed.
