Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alana Erkelens, Owner of Thetis Massage Therapy, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our clinic offers Registered Massage Therapy and Acupuncture. Our therapists have diverse backgrounds and experience, so we are able to assist patients with a variety of concerns, from acute injuries to chronic conditions.

Tell us about yourself

I began a solo practice in 2014, and in 2016 I opened my clinic and began building a team of therapists. Providing safe and effective care is very important to me, and I love being able to collaborate with other therapists. I’m also passionate about assisting new practitioners in beginning their careers and offering guidance and support as they establish their practice. I teach several courses in the Massage Therapy program, and I love being able to support students even after they graduate and transition into their new careers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’m very proud of the team we’ve built and the collaborative approach to care we can offer. The environment is very supportive and inclusive, and there’s a strong sense of community.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

When there’s a conflict between individuals and there isn’t a way to make everyone happy. Trying to navigate those situations fairly and address everyone’s concerns as much as possible. Sometimes there’s no way to avoid being the bad guy to someone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice! There are people who have already gone through the growing pains and can help you avoid making the same mistakes.
  2. Take care of yourself. You are your greatest asset.
  3. Don’t try to do too much too quickly. Make sure what you have is as sustainable as possible.
