Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristen Alderson, Owner of Thieves, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Thieves is a cocktail lounge located in the heart of the Broad Ripple Village in Indianapolis, IN. Our customers range from 21-100 and come in all different shapes, sizes, creeds, and backgrounds.

Tell us about yourself

I created the Thieves brand in 2020 after I was furloughed from my corporate job. I have a passion for nightlife and wanted to create an experience in Broad Ripple that didn't formerly exist. I'm motivated by guests who walk through the front door and keep returning to share what my team and I have created.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, the best part of owning this business has been creating both a brand and an experience. At Thieves, we're very intentional with every detail inside the bar and what ingredients we use in our beverages. We are highly focused on the total experience each time patrons step through the door.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Everyone's greatest resource is their time - and when you own a business, there is never enough time to implement all the ideas swirling in your head. The key is prioritization and keeping true to yourself and your goals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about what you do. Owning and running a business is not for the faint at heart - you better love your product/service down to your bones.
  2. Be prepared to work harder than you ever imagined. No one will care about your business as much as you do. It's going to take WORK from you to make it succeed.
  3. Look for ways to scale in every decision you make. It's best if your business isn't reliant on your skills alone - what can you do to train others to do parts of what you do so that you can continue to grow? (And maybe take a day off one day)
