Make Your Home Feel Bigger - Thun Improvements

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home improvement but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rosaura Thun, Owner of Thun Improvements, located in Rialto, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help creative women who fear using power tools looking to DIY their home without spending a fortune and waiting on others to get it done so that they can be fearlessly badass when it comes to making their space beautiful.

So basically, I'm a power tool teacher, DIY enthusiast, and one proud mompreneur.

Tell us about yourself

I was born into a family of contractors, construction workers, and woodworkers. You name it, my family has built, created, and DIY'd it. However, growing up in this "men's only" world. My brothers learned the trade, and I didn't. That, however, never stopped me from picking up a tool and just deciding that I wanted to build.

It wasn't until three years ago when my father was diagnosed with cancer, that I decided to create a business teaching women how to use power tools. I thought of all the women who grew up without a family like mine. Who had never picked up tools - but they had a million ideas on how they wanted their home to look and feel.

I started posting little tool tutorials on social media, creating a website to have as a hub for those tutorials and empowering women through my social channels.

Then, I created a digital video course - teaching women how to use power tools so that they could DIY their dream space. What motivates me each day to do what I do, is the community of women who will save money and time and feel so badass DIYing their home projects.

And the fact that I get to share my dad's wisdom and legacy with so many others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner so far had got to be when I launched my course for the first time. I was discouraged as the first day of the sale was coming to an end, and no one bought. It wasn't until AFTER the launch was done that someone found me through TikTok and purchased.

The course hadn't been filmed yet. I was just pre-selling the idea to see if anyone would be interested.

When I ran the launch again a second time, I had two more students. Those first few sales and students really are a big accomplishment. It meant - my work resonated with creative women. It meant that I had a business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner in the digital space specifically - is learning how to market yourself while still being a human and creating connections and community with the people around you.

That and making sure you file your taxes correctly once you start making money.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you're looking to start a business - now is the time to get in on it. The digital space is just going to keep growing. It's not saturated. If you have an idea but so many others are doing it. It means that idea sells.
  2. Running your own business means making your own schedule. This also means you can easily take every day off and get nothing done. Make it a habit to set some office hours to get the biggest ROI items done first.
  3. Looking to grow your business - look at your community. They are who you want to help. They're not just numbers and followers on a screen. They are real people who you can be of service to.

If you can just help one person a day - with your products, coaching, offers, whatever, you are making a difference.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
