Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in alternative & holistic health service but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Millerbis, owner of Thyme to Unwind, located in Folsom, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Thyme to Unwind was created in 2000. It was created to provide a platform, a pedestal, a nest … where individuals set aside time and dedication to explore their own ability to heal. Thyme to Unwind encourages people to fully acknowledge where they're at with the Mind, Body, and SPIRITUAL nature of themselves. From there, they can decide how healthy or not each of these areas is, which creates the overall state of their WHOLE BEING. From there, they can start making changes in their health that will guide them to the success of achieving their goals.
My life's work at this time is dedicated to empowering people to grasp hold of their health on all levels and be the biggest health advocate for themselves.

Some of the tools I use (yet not limited to) are:

  1. Manual therapies that inspire me from Eastern traditions of healing and Western body mechanics, biology, physiology, and pathology.
  2. Photobiomodulation therapy, aka Low Light Laser Therapy. This is a very promising and growing field of therapy that is proving itself to be very beneficial on the cellular level.
  3. Coaching programs. Not everything can be addressed on a therapy table. My coaching programs are one-on-one, goal-focused sessions that allow the client to explore where blockages exist in their life, which keeps them from living a truly Enriched life. We address those blockages, examine where they originated from, and work to remove them, heal them, whatever needs to happen to clear their path.

Tell us about yourself

I was a corporate individual from the age of 18 to about the age of 29. At this point, I took a job at a school that taught the healing arts, both from a Western and Eastern standpoint. It was my first massage class where I understood that I stumbled upon a path that I was destined to stumble across.

Since then, my life has a new direction that takes into account that I am here physically, in a physical world and need to sustain not only the quality of life I prefer to live but also, I need to sustain my health, mentally/physically/spiritually that will allow me to continue to build my business that serves such a vital role in others life.

My motivations come whenever I see a client have an epiphany, a deep stirring, a recognition, and remembering who they truly are. To bear witness to someone's healing process is a sacred moment and one that is vital to give space to, as those moments pass very fast and yet carry PROFOUND wisdom not usually found anywhere else in the world. These are pivotal moments where, if allowed, the proper room and space can change a person's life forever. This motivates like nothing else can, and I feel very blessed this work, and I found each other.

Working with others also inspires me to continue the multi-layers of digging into my own healing processes. I am reminded, through working with others, that I TOO have the power and full advocacy of my health.
Healing, from my perspective, is an ongoing process throughout our lives. There is no stopping.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

FREEDOM.
Bypassing, or better stated, feeling the fear of leaving what was comfortable and opening my own business anyway. I can see and appreciate what the years of corporate life taught me, and I carried those lessons right along with me into my own creations. It's been a nice balance of knowledge and skill. Now, my biggest accomplishment is every morning; I wake up; it's a new day to walk into my healing arts studio, knowing that true magic is going to happen today. Some big, some small - just the fact that accomplishing beautiful work with clients gets to be a part of my day when I'm here is a true blessing. I feel more BLESSED than I do accomplish things.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

HA!, great question. The first thing that comes to mind is when mistakes happen, a glitch in the program, human error, there is no one to point the finger at other than myself! I've had to learn how to be humble.

Being a business owner has taught me to get real honest about my limitations. I've spent many wasted hours trying to master something in or for my business that just doesn't fit me. It's good that I tried; I give myself Kudos for that, but knowing when to back away from the machine is also a skill I've had to learn.

So one of the hardest things really is coming across something that's needed in the business, I don't know how to do it, so my choices are either to learn how to do it or hire someone. This can be challenging, especially if what I need to learn is going to take a lot of time or hire someone to do it, which can sometimes be an unexpected expense.
Finding that balance can be tough.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn what your resources are for starting a new business BEFORE you start that new business. There's ALOT of resources out there for every industry you can imagine.
  2. Believe in what you're doing; if it feels right, it probably is. Lessen outside chatter and just keep moving toward your vision. You'll slip and fall, we all do...don't let that deter you.
  3. Work with what you have; even if it doesn't match your ending image - it'll grow. Try to stay out of heavy debt while you're growing.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Business Ownership isn't for everyone out there. For those of us that take the helm of our ships and keep pushing forward toward our visions are special kinds of people … in my book. It takes tenacity to do so nowadays. It's a different lifestyle, but one that gives so many gifts back.
