Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tona Rose, owner of Rebuilding after Cancer with Tona Rose, located in Sacramento, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a Degree in Cancer Exercise, a Certification in Stroke Recovery and Functional Movement, and a Master's in Nutrition with extensive study and research on how to heal the body with food.

I work with individuals who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis or recovering from a stroke. I also work with the aging population on how they perform their daily activities. Showing them proper form and techniques to prevent falling and injury. I also work with individuals who want to incorporate healthy eating into their lifestyle for disease prevention and overall health.

Tell us about yourself

My cousin was diagnosed with Stage IV Breast cancer at 33. The doctors said she would not make it through chemo. I was getting my Master's in Nutrition when she was given this diagnosis. We changed her nutrition to plant-based (vegan). The doctors were floored at her recovery (this was in Indiana in the mid-90s). She became a student at Indiana University Medical Hospital.

My cousin was my drive to start my business. I love watching my clients get strong and vibrant in their new bodies. Watching them feel confident again and letting them know there is hope.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is watching someone with a horrible diagnosis take control of their body and life. Guiding them on their nutrition and exercise to fight the diagnosis. Watching them in their power to conquer.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not trying to overthink my business. Bigger is not always better. Staying connected truly to my niche and not trying to add more certifications or credentials.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what feels right for you. Don't do something because it's a trend.
  2. Don't start a business based on making money. If you find your niche, the money will come because you are happy doing what you're doing.
  3. Networking with like-minded people is a must.
