Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Javier Mendoza Olmos, founder of Toronto Eco Adventures Inc., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Toronto EcoAdventures offers day trips for small groups and solo travelers to some of Ontario's most beautiful parks and natural areas. Every trip is thoughtfully researched and designed to be a blend of both activity (such as hiking, canoeing, or snowshoeing) and relaxation. Our customers are a blend of folks who are new and experienced with the outdoors. We take pride in sharing knowledge about our destinations while creating opportunities for city-dwellers to connect with nature.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved the outdoors and being in nature- it has forever been a huge source of inspiration, and it is where I feel most like myself. I started this business because I wanted to share the enormous benefits of being in natural spaces and the joy that traveling and discovering new places can bring. My business strives to make the outdoors more accessible for newcomers to Toronto and tourists, as well as folks with a newfound interest in outdoor activity who don't have vehicles or prefer a more guided experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel fortunate to witness many people who live in Toronto enjoying the outdoors for the first time! It's not uncommon for someone to tell me, "I have never been this far north!". I'm incredibly validated when my clients remark that they can't wait to keep exploring Ontario, try new hikes, continue learning how to canoe, or feel inspired to go camping! Getting repeat customers is also a huge accomplishment for me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the most difficult thing that comes with being a business owner is setting boundaries between your personal and professional life. Staying on top of the admin work and marketing that goes into a business is very consuming, so time management and boundaries are key!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear understanding of your target audience- research and get to know them if you don't already!
  2. Get comfortable using as many social media platforms as you can. Get at least a basic understanding of graphic design and photo/video editing. Communicate with integrity and enthusiasm!
  3. Continuously seek educational and training opportunities to ensure you offer your services with the most knowledge and competency possible.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I feel very lucky to have successfully turned my passion into my livelihood. It's never too late to share what you love with others!
