Live Your Best Life - Tracy Davenport

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Tracy Davenport, Founder of Tracy's Healthy Living, located in Centreville, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of breaking down scientific research and presenting it through writing or public speaking. Most of my work is around avoiding diseases and using sleep to help with performance. My customers are mostly NCAA Division I college athletes, coaches, and trainers, but I also do corporate talks (including Amazon).

Tell us about yourself

I am passionate about science and understanding what we know (and don't know). I started as an engineer, then developed a math and science camp for girls, then went for my Ph.D. and became a researcher and college professor. Soon after, my mom developed Alzheimer's disease, so I quit my job to help with her care and advocate for her needs. We know there is a connection between sleep and Alzheimer's, so I know that if I prevent even one young athlete from developing AD, it's all been worth it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have published over 1000 medical articles and worked with 1000s of clients. But my biggest accomplishment is when I get to really break down research and use it to move people toward more healthy behaviors.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The constant hustle. I tend to say yes too much, just always wanting to do more and more - which isn't always the healthiest philosophy - haha!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to your calling. You aren't wrong.
  2. Share your calling with people who get you and support you.
  3. Be willing to pivot and stay flexible (for example, I am better in person, but in 2022 some clients want me virtually, so I need to stay flexible).

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you start to doubt yourself, just go inward and work hard on your craft. In other words, while waiting for customers/clients, get really good at what you do. When you are ready (and the universe sees you are ready), business will come.
