What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tristan Duplichain Photography LLC is a photo studio offering styled conceptual photography for weddings, editorial, commercial and other genres of photography.

Tell us about yourself

I started photographing at 15 years old while in a program in high school. Starting off in graphic design, I realized how much I loved working with people and capturing their lives and likeness. I’m motivated by my children, friends, and family. They keep me going and are always my biggest supporters.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is opening my photography studio. It’s hard for photographers to be able to open a fully legal business, and with hard work, it’s finally my reality.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come from being a business owner for me is selling myself. It took a lot of business classes to learn how to sell what I offer. It’s more than just a business, it’s an art and how I feel, and everyone perceives it differently. You have to show your value, and being so young when I started, I had to make people realize I was more than just a kid with a camera. Fifteen years later, it’s paid off.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top 3 tips would be to market online; first, social media is an amazing tool that was just starting when I opened my business but had really grown my audience. My second tip is to do your research and spend money in the right places. Have a budget and stick to it. If you want to grow, you have to save money and spend it where it needs to grow. My third tip is to grow a community. It takes a village, and making friends with everyone you meet adds value, and the worth of mouth is just as powerful as special media marketing.
