Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tara Hess, Founder of Tulsa Pediatric Sleep Consulting, located in Tulsa, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a certified Gentle Sleep Coach who works with families of children from birth to ten years. I founded Tulsa Pediatric Sleep Consulting in 2011 as one of the first sleep consultants in the U.S.

Tell us about yourself

Once upon a time, I stayed home with my colicky, high-needs baby all day while my husband went to work (boy, was I jealous of him then!). I spent most of those days trying to get my daughter to fall asleep and stay asleep for naps and most of my evenings trying to get her to sleep at bedtime just to have her wake up multiple times at night. Keep in mind, this was a little before most people had a smartphone to Google everything and before Facebook even came out (feeling old here!). I was pretty much on my own to figure it out until I discovered there were people called sleep consultants. The options were very limited then, but I hired the one who ended up starting the first sleep consulting certification program in the world - the certification I ended up pursuing.

My training program is the most extensive & professional sleep certification program out there. I never dreamed that I would be thankful for those sleepless nights, but now I know there was a reason for them! I was once the tired parent that I enjoy helping today! After spending the past decade working with families, I truly believe that every child can learn to sleep better, and I love seeing parents find so much more joy in parenthood once they are well-rested.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building this business from scratch and continuing to scale it year after year. As a former teacher, I knew nothing about building a business. Now I have worked one-on-one with thousands of families all over the world and created an online sleep course as well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing everything without a team. Being in charge of everything can be a lot. I have to answer emails, and phone calls, create plans, consult with clients, write blogs, post on social media, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get organized and have a plan.
  2. Keep detailed records.
  3. Consistently provide a great service so that people will want to refer you!
