Creating Things From Wood With Love - Turning a New Leaf

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Williams, Owner of Turning A New Leaf, located in Lexington, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business... is complicated. Basically, we work with wood and branch out from there. James creates the frames, furniture, and anything that involves cutting the wood down or putting larger pieces together. I create the designs, and together we cut, glue, and paint as needed. We have recently branched out into sublimation, so that's an entire new avenue for us and the applications for both, combined, are limitless.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been artsy, creative, and free-spirited. James is more down-to-earth and has worked in construction his entire life. He wanted a laser and kept putting it off, waiting for the right time. I am one to jump in feet first, and so I did. I bought the laser, and we were off to the races. Creating new items every day is what motivates both of us. It's fun to see an idea come to fruition.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Still remaining in business through a pandemic and all that the world is currently facing is a huge accomplishment. We continue to grow and still struggle, but we are here, creating and selling nationwide. Every year at Christmas, we sell thousands of ornaments to the military. We personalize them and ship them to many military bases, even Hawaii. We are proud to bring joy to those who serve our country.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The lack of support and encouragement from our government. Small businesses are America's framework, and I feel like we are being stymied. Don't get me started on politics. LOL.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it Now!
  2. Ask for advice from those who have already done or are doing it.
  3. Don't give up. There will be bad times and good times. Plan ahead and do the best you can. If you fall down, get back up and keep going. Find the good in every day and take pride in your w

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Take pride in your work... always send out your best because that is your signature. The only thing we have in life that is truly ours is our integrity. Never skimp on quality
