Using storytelling to build relationships

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jen Amos at Jen Amos Consulting. Jen helps personal brands leverage podcasting and self publishing as a means to foster and nurture quality relationships.

Tell us all about your business...

I coach personal brands on how to make ordinary stories into extraordinary connections via podcasting and self-publishing. The bridge between you & your perfect connection is an exchange of stories.

As a personal brand (i.e. your persona toward a specific audience), one thing is certain: Relationships are everything. Whether you are a self-employed individual or “the face” of a business, leveraging the power of storytelling is the key to cultivating productive, purposeful and profitable relationships.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

I run a financial firm with my husband, a media platform focused on American women of Filipino descent, and I offer consulting services to personal brands interested in incorporating open dialogue and quality relationships as part of their business model. Everything I do stems from a sense of responsibility and is a reflection of my multifacetedness as an individual and entrepreneur.

As a small business owner, what does success ultimately mean to you?

To have a sense of purpose and know that I am serving others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

Creating systems around many ideas can be difficult. When you want sustainability, often times you have to let go of many big ideas you've fallen in love with in order to make some really work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

Get help and refine your team as you go. You need help to run a business - that's a non-negotiable suggestion. You also need help that you can rely on, which may require that you filter through a number of people until you find the right fit for you and your business.

If there was one thing you could do repeatedly to help grow your business, what would it be?

Refining our systems to continually improve customer service.

What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to keep it all together?

Putting everything on my calendar. Times to work, times to rest, etc.

Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and best business resources/books?

Currently reading Jason Cutter's book, Selling with Authentic Persuasion, and highly recommend it! You can hear my past interview with him at here. The entrepreneurs that shaped me early on is: Robert Kiyosaki, Jim Rohn, Dale Carnegie (How to Win Friends and Influence People), and Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich).
