Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ute-Christin Cowan, Owner of Ute-Christin Photography LLC, located in Milford, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a portrait business in Milford, Connecticut. I specialize in maternity, newborn, children & family photography. I love shooting in the studio, but I also enjoy capturing special moments outside. Connecticut has so many beautiful places that I love to explore with my clients. I am fortunate to have many clients from all over the state and even from neighboring states. Having a returning client is always the biggest compliment because it means you did something right.

Tell us about yourself

I am originally from Germany and came to the USA 20 years ago. I started off working with children and later on developed a love for photography. I started to sign up for classes to improve my skills, and 13 years ago, I started my own business. After a few years, I was able to take my business full-time and have loved every minute since. My clients are my biggest motivation. I love capturing their special moments, and I love being part of their journeys. It is a big honor to do what I love every day. Without my client's trust, this wouldn't be possible.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I was able to build this business on my own from the bottom up. I now have a cozy studio and can provide a great photography experience to my clients. I pride myself on great customer service, and I love that I have so many returning clients. I am very grateful for the last 13 years and very excited about what the next will bring.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

What are the hardest things about being a business owner? It surely gets lonely at times! I used to work in an office, and I miss seeing co-workers. Also, when you are self-employed, you are always working. Even if it is just checking emails at all hours of the day, however, I wouldn't have it any other way. Being my own boss allows me to be there for two children and be flexible with my schedule.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I will start with: Have a great business plan. I find it very important to know what to expect when starting your own business. Get everything covered from the very start. Get insurance, pay your taxes, and do it the right way. If something should go wrong, you want to be covered. I didn't quit my day job for a very long time until I knew I could take the risk. And oftentimes, it is a big risk.

Find a great support system. You will need it. Especially in the beginning when you start everything. Have them be your biggest cheerleader. Don't be afraid to ask for help; often other people have great ideas. Try everything and stick with what you like and what you are best at. Determine business hours and stick to them. I know it is hard, but we want to ensure you do not get burned out or overwhelmed.

Have fun! Most importantly, you must like what you are doing because this is a big investment: time & money. Always keep your head up and "keep on swimming." You got this!!
