What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business provides management accounting services to small businesses that are beyond the start-up phase and are in growth mode. Our focus is on teaching owners/managers to use key metrics to make educated business decisions.
Tell us about yourself
After working my way up to controller-level accounting positions, I decided to go back to school for my degree in management accounting. While taking these courses, it was apparent how important these skills are to successful businesses. By offering these services to businesses that don't have a budget for full-time staff, I can help more business owners.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a support staff that shares the company vision and works diligently to provide value to every one of our clients.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is having to let go of staff that doesn't fit in the company's culture, in spite of being in a tight labor market. The improved morale and productivity is the reward for making the hard decision.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Hire people that make you better. This could be hiring someone smarter than you or someone who holds you accountable to your own vision.
- Pay attention to the numbers, so you know where you're at and where you're headed. Course correct when necessary to stay on track with your goals.
- Have enough capital going in so you don't have to prematurely close what would be a viable and rewarding business.
