Move Better, Look Better, Feel Better - Vital Athletic

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mat Pitts, owner of Vital Athletic LLC., located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We offer a scientific approach to all things fitness. Personal training, nutrition coaching, in person and virtually, as well as metabolic testing to ensure the direction we are going in the direction you want to go. With our team of trainers and physio experts, we offer services to every person, from post-surgery and prenatal to athletic performance and weight loss.

Tell us about yourself

Having always been in the athletic realm, from high school athletics to a collegiate level, studying exercise physiology in college was a simple choice. After grad school, I started with a large corporate fitness company and learned the ropes of the business, and gained invaluable experience. However, I felt a more personalized touch would serve my clients and customers better, so I decided to strike out on my own in order to bring the level of care and attention my clients needed and deserved.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment isn't some grand opening of a gym or reaching a certain revenue number. Those are great and certainly worthy of being celebrated. However, I think that my biggest accomplishment was when I started to get referrals from current clients that brought in new business from my previous employer, which signaled to me that I was achieving what I had set out to do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner has to be the uncertainty. With the COVID pandemic, I literally woke up one morning, and everything that I had built was gone. Having to rebuild knowing that can happen is something that will always be in the back of my mind.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. 1: Have a plan, and stick to it. Know how you are going to start and how you plan to grow.
  2. 2: Have agility, don't be afraid to pivot if you see something isn't panning out.
  3. 3: Have systems; always have a standard of how you operate.
