Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joana Montenegro, Co-Founder of Voodoo Scientific USA Inc., located in San Pedro, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We have solved a problem that has plagued the distilled alcoholic beverage industry for well over a hundred years. We have invented the solution to the harsh, unpleasant "bite" that comes with all spirits, and this is the reason many of us don't drink these products. And by the way, we do it by eliminating noxious compounds - a positive all around!

Tell us about yourself

I love disruption, and I love problem-solving. There's something very exciting about hearing, "You don't understand; this problem can't be solved. It's not that simple". I've found that to rarely be true. Most things are, in fact, that simple...when you look at the problem in just the right way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Two things come to mind: the invention and patent for the solution to harsh booze is such a cool personal accomplishment, but honestly, the ability to embark on this entrepreneurship journey with joy and excitement rather than stress and dread (which everyone told me would be the case) have been an amazing accomplishment for myself and my co-founder!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It can sometimes be hard to have to take care of aspects of the business that aren't my strong suit, but they have to get done. The legal work around establishing a business just isn't fun for me, but thankfully I have an amazing partner and legal firm to help. Finding the right help is always so important!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you are starting a business, the most important piece is to figure out your "why." And be secure in that "why." People will doubt you, people will tell you why it won't work, and you can't let that soften your resolve. When you go off and follow a dream, it does one of two things: it either inspires people or it confronts people. Some feel like it's a call to action for their own lives. Others are reminded of their own lack of courage, and those are the ones that will tend to want to tell you that you're foolish. Ignore them. You'll never regret the shots you take!
