Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in general services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nathan Vas, Co-Founder of Waxwing Services, located in Richmond, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Waxwing Services is an eco-friendly cleaning company servicing the Metro Vancouver area. Our goal is to make the process of getting your home or office space cleaned as easily as possible. We only use eco-friendly cleaning products made from biodegradable ingredients to make sure we also keep our community clean and free of harsh chemicals. Our customers range from families with young children to retired individuals, all of whom we work closely with to make sure their personalized cleaning needs are met.

Tell us about yourself

Prior to starting the business, we had both lost our jobs during the second wave of the pandemic while being full-time students at the University of British Columbia. It was around this time we started discussing starting our own business, where we could be our own bosses and work on our schedules. We decided to venture into the home cleaning market as Nathan had previous experience cleaning, and we saw the increasing need for high-quality cleaning coming up. We really enjoy engaging with our clients and getting to know them; it gives us extra motivation to make sure the job is done properly. We see how our services can lead to parents can spend more time with their kids on the weekends or how someone who might not be able to clean by themselves is still able to enjoy a clean home.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For us, it was when we went out to our first job. Before this, there were months of preparation to make sure everything was ready for this exact situation, but actually going and completing a job made everything real.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest challenges that come with being a business owner is navigating the ups and downs. Putting in so much hard work and effort and seeing your idea grow into a business means every small step along the way means so much. But the opposite is true as well; when one thing doesn’t go according to plan, it can be pretty demoralizing. It is hard during these down times to stick with the vision and keep pushing forward to the next goal.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research! Creating a simple business plan can help guide you and keep you on track.
  2. Always be learning from people around you. Take advice from people who have been in your position before.
  3. Don’t be afraid to take a risk.
