Nutrition & Lifestyle - Well with Sarah

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Stebbins, Founder of Well with Sarah, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide functional nutrition counseling to support people with metabolic, thyroid, and adrenal health conditions so they can rediscover their well-being by getting to the root cause of their illness and using food and lifestyle as a healing solution.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for nutrition and food originated from my own collection of seemingly unrelated health challenges that were, frankly, annoying. I experienced cystic acne, heavy and painful periods, acid reflux, a life-threatening blood clot at 19 years old, gas, bloating, cramping, gut irritation, exhaustion, and anxiety. I measured my health by how thin and "in shape" or active I was. I played soccer year-round on multiple teams through college, so I was pretty thin, and my cardio was great, yet I still had all of these annoying health problems. I honestly didn't even characterize them as problems because they were so normal for me, so I just thought they were a part of my life and would be something I always had to deal with. I had no idea that they could be related to one another or that I could do something about them with something as accessible as food and my habits and that I could ultimately feel better and get rid of them.

At the start of the New Year nearly ten years ago, I read an article in a Women's Health magazine and shifted to whole foods, mostly plant-based ways of eating. Within three weeks, my skin cleared, and my energy rebounded. My digestion started to improve, and my periods got more tolerable, though not completely better. It was enough of a change that it got me hooked and really curious about the power of food. I dove in headfirst, became a Certified Holistic Health Coach as well as a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor, quit the corporate job that was burning me out, and I haven't looked back.

I personally know navigating nutrition, health, and wellness can be overwhelming and confusing. There is a lot of noise, and it can be hard to sort through the facts and fiction of what will help you feel better. What you eat has the power to make a more significant impact on your health than any other intervention — food is our greatest tool. There are foods that support a healthy body, while on the other hand, there are foods that can cause confusion that can disrupt your biological terrain and lead to dysfunction within the body.

I work with my clients to help them connect the dots and discover what works well in their bodies, so they can get back to thriving. I teach them about their body, how it works and what it needs to flourish, and I coach them on how to implement sustainable lifestyle changes that are designed to support good health for years to come.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I don't think I can point to a single big accomplishment. I see wins in my business every day. I'm in the business of helping people transform and optimize their health so they can get their life back, so each client that I can help is a big win or accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats!! I love to learn, so I find it interesting but having to do the marketing, sales, operations, and accounting definitely takes my energy away from what I love doing the most, which is helping people manage and heal their chronic health conditions.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start! You aren't going to have everything figured out all at once, but there are TONS of resources out there and available to support you along the way.
  2. Ask for help - I've found that many other business owners out there are very supportive and love helping new business owners.
  3. Find like-minded businesses in your local or virtual community and connect monthly or quarterly. Whether you need someone to talk to, want to shoot your ideas off someone, or need advice, there's no better place to go to gain support than other businesses in a similar industry as you.
