Where flowers are grown, entwined, and shared - The Little Flower Plot

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with the floral artist, Jaclyn Lott, owner of The Little Flower Plot, located in Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom.

What's your business and who are your customers?

My business consists of two parts, growing flowers and wedding floristry. I grow flowers for local florists encouraging the use of British grown flowers. I focus on using natural wild shapes and tones for brides who want a wedding that nods toward nature for the floristry part.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to where you are today...

I first got started after I bought a house with a 100 ft. garden. It was long but narrow; it was challenging to have 50% in full shade and 50% in full sun. After a year, I took on an allotment to grow more annual flowers. Having so many flowers, I realized I needed to do something with them, so I joined an introductory floristry course, later taking on a more advanced course in London. I absolutely love the whole process of working with flowers, growing seasonally, and getting them in front of brides.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is getting over "imposter syndrome" if you are changing careers. You can be confident, but there is always a hint of fear that you are not good enough to work in that industry. Most especially if you are from a totally different one. Sometimes, you have to just take a deep breath and put your best foot forward.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to launch, run and grow a business today?

Research and understand the market you are entering. Look at other similar businesses in your local area. Do not focus on stores that offer the same products but those that have a strong influence too.

Profile your target audience for your local business and talk to them. It's easy to profile the target audience, but the tricky part is communicating with them and understanding their decision-making process.

I started selling flowers at a local food market. Every store sells food and beverage. It was incredible to speak with them and get their honest opinions and tips on growing their business. Exchanging stories and ideas with the other owners gave me loads of insights.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting a business is hard work but very rewarding. It can be scary to take on all the business responsibilities, but you don't have to do everything yourself. If you aren't good with numbers - find someone who is to guide you through. I find that I continuously learn, but there are some things I just can't do, and it's more stressful than it's worth continuing on your own rather than asking for help.
