Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Darcy Scott, owner of Whimsical Cake Studio, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Whimsical Cake Studio is not only amazing cakes. We are a full custom bakery. We can make the cake of your dreams, or custom cookies, pops, bombs, anything your sweet tooth desires. We also make a selection of fun and interesting goodies stocked in the store! Including our famous vanilla velvet cookie dough cake bombs and freeze-dried cheesecake!

Tell us about yourself

I have always baked as a way to help with my mental health, and that is still what motivates me today. Making people makes me happy!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far as a business owner is keeping us open through the pandemic, pivoting constantly, and adapting. Filming for a food network show was pretty cool too!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Boundaries. Not becoming emotionally involved with the staff or clients. Not taking it personally when someone doesn't like our product.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research.
  2. Stand up for what you believe.
  3. Ask for help.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a small biz owner is a lot like having a kid. If you do it right, it should take care of you when you get older..... but not really. Your kids are not obligated to you, and business is never without risk. Learn to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally, physically.
