Beach Cities Psychotherapy - Whitney Boole

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Whitney Boole, Owner of Beach Cities Psychotherapy, located in Hermosa Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Psychotherapy. My clients are people wanting to address relational and mood issues to better their lives. My clients are also people wanting to break free from their trauma.

Tell us about yourself

I often joke that I became a therapist hoping to fix my then-husband and realizing that I could only fix myself. I got my Masters in Clinical Psychology because I was fascinated by people and the choices they make, and I genuinely wanted to help people. Seeing clients heal their trauma and make meaningful change in their lives keep me motivated to do what I do. It's incredibly fulfilling.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Years ago, I envisioned a private practice to serve my community by the beach in Hermosa Beach, California. I imagined walking with my clients on the strand and helping them lead happier lives. I envisioned people coming to my beach location from out of town for EMDR Intensives to heal. My biggest accomplishment is creating that practice and training therapists to be a part of it too.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

So many hats -- payroll, marketing, bookkeeping, supervision, decorating, maintenance, human resources... it's hard to keep all the balls in the air

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love what you do.
  2. Support other businesses in your community -- kindness matters.
  3. It's a marathon, not a race... don't lose sight of that.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I had a gardener once who pointed to the other guy who came to give me an estimate to put in a fence and said, "he's the right guy for you, not me... there's plenty of business to go around." I hired him to do the rest of my landscaping. I refer out a lot in my business. I don't try to help people if I am not the best person to help them. I think that makes me a better clinician. By supporting other businesses and clinicians, I build a reputation that I feel good about. I love supporting other clinicians and other businesses when I can.
