Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Whitney Hills, Owner of Whitney Hills Fitness and Nutrition Consulting, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a personal trainer and nutritionist and am the sole employee in my business. I work with all genders, ages, and abilities, both in person and online.

Tell us about yourself

I struggled with mental health growing up, and I was diagnosed with ADHD while struggling through my Nutrition degree. I realized that exercise and movement played a huge part in my well-being, and weight training specifically was a great way to manage my mental health. I also reversed my osteopenia through strength training.

After graduating, I realized that I no longer wanted a boss or boring day-to-day experience. I worked long days during school and was eager for a way out. I started training on the side and eventually went to full-time. I initially didn't think I would do it forever, and now, I can't imagine doing anything else.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have clients that have been with me for over ten years! I make great friends and connections and just love the variety of people that I get to interact with on a daily basis. It really fuels me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The extra things that come with business ownership. Staying on top of invoicing, taxes, and all the boring stuff. I am definitely conscious of trying to stay well and not hurt myself, as I do need to show up to make money.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If possible, find something to do that you are passionate about. It never gets old. If you can't do this for your career, be sure to make time for these things on the side.
  2. Don't feel pressured to do things that you don't want to do. I don't love social media, and I am busy, so I gave up trying to keep my socials updated. I get most of my business through referrals in the area and not online. Obviously, this only applies to some types of businesses, but you get the idea.
  3. Continue learning and exploring. It forces you out of your comfort zone and can bring you new and fresh ideas, passions, and inspiration.
