What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide peer mentoring and career exploration services for persons with disabilities. We provide services to persons with disabilities aged 14 and up with an emphasis on high school students in the Exceptional Student Education programs in the high schools.

Tell us about yourself

I was teaching high school and started seeing a lack of physical activity in the students. That prompted us to start a magazine discussing the importance of healthy eating and physical exercise as well as how unhealthy habits can lead to obesity. We expanded from there and now target the most severe populations to provide our programs to help them attain a better quality of life through peer mentoring, career exploration, and housing services.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe the biggest accomplishment is the lives that we have changed for people with disabilities that we serve and have served over the past 25 years. We have helped many of our consumers with employment opportunities and helped them stay out of jail. Find homes, recover from substance abuse as well as many other trials and tribulations that come from living in poverty and little to no support.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner is a 24/7 job. You have to be able to handle multiple tasks and always be accountable for your actions. Your team depends on your leadership skills, so you have to possess many hats.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Research, plan, and prepare.
