Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maureen Huggins, owner of Wick Valley Candle, located in Sanford, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a variety of things; I make candles, soaps, scrubs, room sprays, and body butter. My customers are people who appreciate organic soy wax candles when they need to relax.

Tell us about yourself

What got me into the candle business was that I love to make things with my hands, and it just makes me happy to see that people enjoy what I make. What drives me to make candles every day is simply my family; when I'm at my shop mixing and making candles, I have my family there with me, and it's just a great experience to see everyone so happy and fulfilled making candles.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have achieved a lot in a short amount of time, but what I deem my biggest achievement is simply starting my candle business. If I didn't start, I would be where I am today.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest aspect of owning the business that I do is it's not always guaranteed, so you have to come up with ways to get your products more traction, along with marketing all your items so they can bring in revenue.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Begin with a detailed plan. This one is a must: Develop an in-depth plan that fully details how you'll attack the challenge ahead. Get out there and network. Surround yourself with the right people. Stay ahead of the curve. Find a healthy work-life balance.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Also, our company attends farmer's markets, craft fairs, festivals, or other local events, wholesaling to gift shops and boutiques (locally or beyond).
