What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi, I'm Emily, co-founder and creator of WSC & Co.! We make 100% soy wax candles and also offer a plethora of other items, including wax melts, room sprays, car diffusers, and wax melters! We tried to build an affordable, more natural product so that everyone can have access to candles that smell good and burn clean. Our customers come from all walks of life, whether it be a student trying to make their dorm smell like Georgia peaches or a realtor trying to make a new house smell like cookies. We have people from everywhere that use our product.

Tell us about yourself

When I'm not making candles, I work as a cosmetologist, and my husband was an Army Ranger who is currently finishing up college. Initially, I started making candles mostly as a hobby. It was something that had always sounded interesting to me, but one day I just kind of fell down the rabbit hole. A lot of my friends and family loved our candles, and soon people outside our friends and family started asking about them. From there, it just kind of snowballed into WSC & Co. Deciding to start this company was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I love the chemistry side of mixing and testing for our products, and of course, having an endless supply of candles also is pretty nice. But what really motivates me is the fact that we have some of the nicest and most thoughtful customers in the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As business owners, we've been incredibly lucky to get put in a few stores across a few different states, but I think our biggest accomplishment has been the awesome relationships we've made with other business owners and the fact that most of our customers are return customers. It feels so good knowing your customers like and trusts your product.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

TIME MANAGEMENT is the hardest thing about owning a business, without a doubt. Trying to juggle our other jobs and life on top of the business is a constant struggle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Community over competition. There's a market for everyone and room for everyone else.
  2. Just freaking do it. Some people will doubt you, but sometimes you just got to pull the trigger.
  3. Enjoy the in-between moments. Take some time to relish in your success (or failure, haha) before moving on to the next thing.
