Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ben Trapskin, Founder of Yawnder, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Yawnder focuses on mattress reviews and sleep product reviews. Our customers are basically anyone that sleeps or is finding that they are having trouble falling or staying asleep.

Tell us about yourself

The business started from my own frustration with mattress shopping and my lack of quality sleep. I took it upon myself to learn more about sleep and sleep products and how they can affect your quality of sleep. The more I learned, the more I saw a need for quality information for consumers. This led to my website,, and eventually, a retail store in San Diego where customers can now try the latest direct-to-consumer mattress brands, sleep aids, and gadgets.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel good that I am providing a curated selection of sleep products for customers to learn about and experience firsthand. I have tried a lot of junk, so being able to make quality recommendations that can positively impact people's lives is a great accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You have to wear many hats in the beginning. For me, the hardest part has been learning how to delegate and bring on talented staff that can help our business grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be persistent. You will have lots of ups and downs, with more downs than ups but keep going; success is usually just beyond where you think you should quit.
  2. Leverage new technology to accelerate your business, and when so see growth in one area, really focus on growing that.
  3. It doesn't have to be perfect. It's better to get something out there and learn from mistakes than to fret over having it right the first time.
