What's your business, and who are your customers?
yellowbird by Evelyn is a nail care line that encourages humanity to incorporate self-care in their daily routine. One vegan nail polish at a time.
Tell us about yourself
Since I was a preteen, I have enjoyed painting my nails. I would paint my nails when I was happy, sad, or needed time to myself. Not only was it therapeutic, but it felt freeing to do my nails. I started yellowbird because I wanted to share my love of self-care and nail care in a sustainable way. My community is what drives me to keep going. I have met people who have shared how they too, use painting their nails as an opportunity for self-care, and that makes my heart melt every time.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Winning a $10k grant by sharing my passion for nail care and self-care. I usually get anxious about the fundraising process. I applied without much thought (partly because I didn't think I'd win). As I got through the process and saw I was close to winning, it was the first time in a while that I had the confidence to think that maybe I could do this. Maybe I am a businesswoman.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Understanding that the business is not really about me. I may love a particular nail polish, but if my audience wants something different, I want to ensure I'm catering to their needs.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Actually enjoy the business you want to start because when times get tough, you want to remember what sparked your interest to start your business.
- Have patience with yourself as you're getting better by the second.
- Be open to being agile with your business, as shifts can lead to unexpected opportunities.
