Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steve Kesselring, President and CEO of Your Oil Tools, located in Hooksett, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are your one stop shop for everything aromatherapy and essential oils! Our main customers are anyone looking to use essential oils better or looking to make something from Sprays to roller candles or anything in between.

Tell us about yourself

In 2011 I had a truck fire, chemical burns to my lungs, and smoke inhalation. I was in bad shape for several years before I started using essential oils and natural remedies to recover. If it wasn't for essential oils, I do not think I would be able to work today! The medications made me unable to do anything. That's what drives me to empower people to find their own natural way forward for their health and personal care!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Personally, I hate talking about myself. For almost 20 years now, I have been a small business owner, and over that time, I have helped hundreds of small businesses start up or grow. I have won awards and have been featured in several articles, but I'm just a guy that wants to see people be the best at what they do. My biggest accomplishment might not seem to most people like a good thing, and I wouldn't recommend it! Dropping out of Highschool to start my life and career was a hard decision I had to make, but it made me what I am today. Through the school of hard Knox, I have built 7 figure companies from nothing!

Don’t get me wrong. I have gone back to school since and done other things to further my education, but I started in business, as some people would think, with the deck stacked against me. My perseverance and a true desire to succeed drove me this whole time to be able to get where I am today.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

People will always give you their opinion on the hardest thing in business, but it's truly not knowing what you don't know. That's the hardest thing. You need to find mentors, advisors, or just good friends to help you succeed in business!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Years ago, I wrote a blog article called building your business like a rubrics cube. I think it fits this question. There are so many sides to building our growing your business that you can get frustrated or just simply overwhelmed!

  1. The first thing you need to have when starting a business is a good plan! You don't need a perfect business plan, just simply a good plan. Once you have the plan, you can start building or growing your business. I can't tell you what a good plan is because it needs to be your plan. Something that you can deliver with your strengths and skill set. The plan needs to make sense to you!
  2. After that, you need Realistic expectations! You cant start a business today and expect customers to be as excited about your business as you are. You need to have reasonable expectations in Finances, Planning, Growth, and even yourself! Learning that will help you to succeed far beyond anything else you do.
  3. Last know your numbers! Most people fail because they don't have enough profit or just simply do not make enough money to support or grow their business. Pay attention to your numbers or find someone that can do this for you. It is the key to staying in business.
