Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stefanie Taylor, founder of ZAXIE, located in Cranston, RI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

ZAXIE is a third-generation women-owned brand that designs. It produces jewelry and accessories for sparkle lovers all over the United States. You will always find a touch of glitz in our products. Our goal as a brand is to make our consumers feel confident and beautiful every day of their lives. We believe everyone deserves beauty! Our product aims to be the perfect addition to any outfit or event in your life.

Tell us about yourself

I was born into the jewelry business. My grandfather was one of the original manufacturers of the tiaras and crowns for the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants, so it has always been in my blood. After growing up in RI, I went to Fordham University in NYC. I was determined not to join the family business after graduation, even though my mom and dad had me working in the factory and design room every summer since I was 12. After two years of working in finance in Manhattan, my father convinced me to come home, and that was where the journey began.

My motivation each day is my family and my two boys, whom the brand is named after Zachary and Jax. I am also strongly driven by our consumers wanting to put out the best product and experience for those that are loyal to our brand. I love hearing the comments and seeing our product worn when we make people feel great! There is truly nothing better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have always said my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is my amazing team of people that work by my side and have as much passion for what we do as I do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things as a business owner is learning and maintaining a healthy but productive WORK/LIFE balance. Also, learning to be ok with making mistakes but always have the grit to keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You are going to fail repeatedly; prepare for that and make sure you're ready to keep fighting.
  2. You can't accomplish anything great without amazing people around you and a solid support system, try and surround yourself with people that are smarter than you.
  3. Make sure you have a financial plan as well as a business plan and a couple of escape plans just in case.
