Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marc Davis, Founder and CEO of Alchemy Counseling, located in Rockville Centre, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Alchemy Counseling is a private psychotherapy practice for adolescents and young professionals suffering from emotional disturbances ranging from self-esteem issues to anger to suicidal ideation.

Tell us about yourself

Before heading up my own practice, I worked for one of the most notable mental health clinics in NY state, treating underserved communities. I've also been a part of Long Island's preeminent crisis center, where I've trained to-be counselors in handling all manner of mental health crises. For my business, the huge spike in the need for mental health services during the COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for me to create Alchemy Counseling. With my years of experience in crisis management, it felt like the best time since so many were dealing with a plethora of new and unprecedented struggles due to the pandemic.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Over the course of my career, I have interacted with hundreds (if not thousands) of patients. In general, I'm most proud of being able to offer young people the understanding, validation, and solutions that many have been without. The domino effects that my work with my patients has on their lives and the lives of those around them make me never want to stop doing what I do.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a sole practice owner has its share of hardships, such as a lack of guaranteed income, dealing with insurance companies, professional isolation, as well as marketing and competition. Starting with absolutely zero business acumen, I had to learn how to overcome all of that in order to create a thriving practice that allows me to work with the populations that I enjoy most.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. There are myriad free opportunities and resources at your fingertips with the miracle that is the internet. USE THEM!
  2. Consult with others who have already succeeded in what you're aiming to do. Even better would be to have a dedicated mentor or two who you trust and respect.
  3. Be patient and kind to yourself. Progress is rarely (if ever!) a straight line - there will be bumps and setbacks on the road. Focus on reducing their impact and, even more importantly, how to pick yourself back up after you experience them.
