What's your business, and who are your customers?
My name is Huong, but I have gone by Amy for the past 18 years since I started working in the nail industry. Some of my clients are females, but I do have quite a few male and child clients.
Tell us about yourself
I always used to work in the hospitality field, restaurants, souvenirs shop, and interpreting until I came to America. Most Vietnamese American work as nail technicians. I found out that seeking a job for an American company as an Asian was quite challenging. One day I ran to a hiring nail techs ad posted at one of the Asian grocery stores, and that was how I got into what I'm doing now. I love what I do, I like to look at the results, I like detailing, and I'm very meticulous; when I see my client's face with joyful, happy faces, I know I did something right.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
That is "Time". I have more time to do what I want; I have more time to spend with my family. Nobody will tell me that I have to be at work at a certain time or can only leave at a certain time.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
To make every client happy, you will have to deal with all the issues yourself; if someone just had a bad day and decided to put it on you, you will have to learn how to react and deal with such situations. Every job has its own downsides.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Believe in yourself that you can do it! Do the best you can: put off your love and efforts into it. Be genuine and truthful!
